Blogging: What is it?

My first time working or even seeing a blog was on a myspace account. I thought that the individuals posting blogs wanted everyone to read their life stories or what they did that day. I believe that blogs in that sense are personal and for individuals to write what they do every second of the day is a need of attention. But that is my opinion. Also I have read or seen blogs that individuals have written to ask for advice or even ask questions. Blogs should be more for this type of work or for discussion. I have even seen blogs that students put up to ask questions about which topics they should write about in a English class they have or even ask help to a math problem they are having trouble with. All in all, a blog to me is a personal journal that individuals can go and write anything they want to, and receive comments or advice from that can either help or not help them.

  1. To be honest, I agree with your opinion about blogs. I also had my first blogging experience on myspace. I wrote a couple of things but nothing too personal. Some that I have read by others though have been so personal I just thought to myself that these people needed professional help!! It wasn't because I thought they were crazy but it was the message that I took from their words. However, I think that people that blog like that, it is a way of releasing stress and a way to get things off their chest. It is kind of a cop-out for expressing ones feelings. The other blogging that you were talking about, such as posting comments and asking questions for school or work related stuff is very cool and a good way to interact and get a quick response for help. I have had a couple of classes where we have used the Oncourse chat room to ask questions and so on. Last semester my Political Science class actually conducted a class study session for our final on-line!

  2. There certainly are many ways to use blogs. I can honestly say that I have not used them until very recently. I can see all the potential for good but I can also see the potential for bad. We just need to be careful in which way we are doing it. Going into a professional career, it can be dangerous to have a public blog because it is tough to monitor it and it can jeopardize a professional career. We must be careful of our Cyber Footprint.

  3. There are many websites that are "blogs" and there are also many ways to use blogs. I never thought that MySpace was a blog, but I guess now that I think of it, it is a blog in a way. People post things on their page and their friends post comments as well. I have used a blog page before for a previous class where we commented on articles relating to fairy tales. This is where I got my first taste of a "real" blog. I agree that blogs are a journal where people post things about themselves or interests they may have and others respond to this. I believe this is a great tool to use when others respond to the topic discussed as well.
